Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
