This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
