No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
